CJMM (Clinical Judgment Measurement Model)

The NCSBN's 6-step framework for NGN item design

Definition

The Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) is the six-step framework developed by the NCSBN to measure nursing clinical judgment on the Next-Generation NCLEX. Every NGN item is built from one of its steps.

The Six Steps

  1. Recognize Cues: Identify relevant information.
  2. Analyze Cues: Interpret significance.
  3. Prioritize Hypotheses: Rank likelihood or urgency.
  4. Generate Solutions: Identify possible interventions.
  5. Take Action: Implement chosen intervention.
  6. Evaluate Outcomes: Assess response.

Why It Matters

Clinical judgment is the top cause of graduate-nurse errors. The NCSBN developed CJMM to ensure new nurses can think critically, not just memorize facts.

Application Strategy

When tackling any NGN item, identify which CJMM step is being tested. Case studies progress through all six steps.

NCLEX Relevance

Underpins every NGN case study, Bowtie, and Matrix item. Understanding the model improves test strategy and clinical reasoning.
