Endoscopy

Visual examination of internal organs using a fiberoptic scope

Definition

Endoscopy is the visualization of internal body structures using a flexible or rigid fiberoptic scope. Common types include upper GI endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, and arthroscopy.

Pre-Procedure Nursing Care

  • Informed consent
  • NPO 6 to 12 hours
  • Bowel prep for colonoscopy
  • Hold anticoagulants as ordered
  • IV access and baseline vitals
  • Remove dentures
  • Moderate sedation preparation

Post-Procedure Nursing Care

Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, and sedation level, for upper GI: keep NPO until gag reflex returns. Assess for complications: bleeding, perforation (sharp abdominal pain, rigidity, fever), infection, reaction to sedation. Position to promote comfort. Educate about any biopsy findings pending.

NCLEX Relevance

Check gag reflex before oral intake after EGD/bronchoscopy. Watch for perforation signs.
