Eupnea
Normal, relaxed, effortless breathing
Definition
Eupnea is the normal, quiet, and effortless breathing pattern. In adults, the rate is typically 12 to 20 breaths per minute, with regular rhythm and adequate depth.
Normal Respiratory Rates by Age
- Newborn: 30 to 60
- Infant: 30 to 50
- Toddler: 25 to 32
- Child (6 to 12): 18 to 26
- Adolescent/Adult: 12 to 20
Characteristics of Eupnea
Quiet, regular, symmetric chest expansion; no use of accessory muscles; no retractions; no nasal flaring; SpO2 ≥ 95% on room air. Patient can speak in full sentences.
Clinical Applications
Eupnea is the target state in respiratory assessment (any deviation). Tachypnea, bradypnea, dyspnea, labored breathing, or adventitious sounds. Warrants further assessment and intervention.
Nursing Considerations
Count respiratory rate for a full minute when abnormal or in infants. Observe patient without their knowledge to avoid altering the rate. Document rate, depth, and effort.
NCLEX Relevance
Memorize normal respiratory rates by age.
