Expected vs. Unexpected
Differentiating normal disease symptoms from dangerous complications
Definition
Expected vs. Unexpected is a prioritization framework: expected findings (consistent with the patient's diagnosis) are lower priority than unexpected findings that may signal complications.
Examples
- Expected in heart failure: mild pedal edema. Unexpected: new pink frothy sputum (pulmonary edema).
- Expected in sickle cell crisis: severe pain. Unexpected: altered mental status (stroke).
- Expected post-op: incisional pain. Unexpected: severe abdominal rigidity (hemorrhage or peritonitis).
How to Apply
Ask: Is this finding normal for this patient's diagnosis? If no (investigate further).
NCLEX Relevance
Key to identifying which patient to see first.
