Hepatic
Relating to the liver
Definition
Hepatic refers to anything relating to the liver, the largest internal organ and a critical site of metabolism, detoxification, synthesis of plasma proteins (albumin, clotting factors), bile production, and storage of glycogen, vitamins, and iron.
Common Hepatic Conditions
- Hepatitis (viral, alcoholic, drug-induced)
- Cirrhosis
- Liver cancer
- Fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH)
- Hepatic encephalopathy
- Liver failure
Hepatic Function Tests
AST, ALT (hepatocellular injury); alkaline phosphatase, GGT, bilirubin (cholestatic); albumin, PT/INR (synthetic function); ammonia (encephalopathy).
Nursing Considerations
Assess for hepatic dysfunction: jaundice, ascites, asterixis, bruising, edema (review medications). Many require dose adjustment in liver disease. Avoid acetaminophen and other hepatotoxic drugs. Provide nutritional support.
NCLEX Relevance
Liver disease affects medication metabolism and clotting.
