Intermittent

Occurring at irregular or alternating intervals

Definition

Intermittent refers to something that happens at irregular intervals, starting and stopping rather than being continuous. In nursing, used to describe symptoms, treatments, and conditions.

Examples

  • Intermittent claudication: Leg pain with exercise that resolves with rest. Peripheral arterial disease.
  • Intermittent fever: Temperature spikes with returns to normal.
  • Intermittent catheterization: Periodic emptying of bladder rather than indwelling.
  • Intermittent bolus feeding: Enteral feedings given at intervals.
  • Intermittent suction: Used with NG tubes.

Nursing Considerations

Document timing, duration, and triggers of intermittent symptoms. Intermittent claudication education: walking programs, antiplatelet therapy, foot care, smoking cessation.

NCLEX Relevance

Intermittent claudication classically PAD; promote walking to collateral circulation.
