Kinesiology

The scientific study of body movement

Definition

Kinesiology is the study of human movement, integrating anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and psychology. It underpins physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and rehabilitation.

Clinical Applications in Nursing

  • Range of motion (ROM) exercises to prevent contractures and DVT
  • Safe patient handling (use gait belt, mechanical lifts)
  • Ergonomics to prevent injury
  • Adaptive techniques for patients with limited mobility

Nursing Considerations

Perform ROM at least twice daily for immobile patients. Use proper body mechanics when repositioning patients. Refer to PT/OT for rehabilitation after stroke, fracture, or surgery.

NCLEX Relevance

ROM, positioning, and safe patient handling are repeatedly tested.
