Latent Phase

The first phase of labor with mild contractions and early cervical dilation

Definition

The latent phase is the first and longest phase of the first stage of labor, extending from the onset of labor to 6 cm cervical dilation. Contractions are mild and irregular.

Characteristics

  • Cervical dilation: 0 to 6 cm
  • Contractions: 5 to 30 minutes apart, mild to moderate, 30 to 45 seconds
  • Duration: Variable, often longest phase (6 to 20 hours in primigravida)
  • Mood: Excited, talkative

Nursing Interventions

Provide education about labor process. Encourage ambulation, hydration, and light food if tolerated. Teach breathing and relaxation techniques. Monitor maternal vitals and fetal heart rate per protocol. Avoid frequent vaginal exams. Educate about when to come to hospital (4-1-1 rule: contractions every 4 min, lasting 1 min, for 1 hour).
