Lateral
Relating to the side of the body away from the midline
Definition
Lateral is an anatomic term meaning toward the side of the body, away from the midline. It contrasts with medial (toward midline).
Clinical Applications
- Lateral position (side-lying): Patient on side, often used for comfort, postural drainage, or after certain procedures.
- Left lateral (Sims): Used for pregnant patients to reduce vena cava compression and for rectal procedures/enemas.
- Lateral decubitus chest x-ray: Assesses small pleural effusions.
- Lateral aspect: Outer side of body parts (lateral epicondyle, lateral malleolus).
Nursing Considerations
Rotate patients to lateral positions every 2 hours to prevent pressure injuries. Support with pillows. Left lateral is preferred in pregnancy and late decelerations.
NCLEX Relevance
Left lateral position: pregnancy, late decels, enemas.
