Least Invasive First
Attempt non-invasive treatments before invasive interventions
Definition
Least Invasive First is a principle that recommends attempting non-invasive or minimally invasive interventions before moving to more invasive ones, when clinically appropriate.
Examples
- Repositioning before administering oxygen for mild dyspnea
- Nonpharmacologic pain management (ice, repositioning) before opioids
- Oral rehydration before IV fluids
- Dietary changes before medications
- Physical therapy before surgery
Exception
In emergencies, move directly to the most effective intervention. Do not delay life-saving care (e.g., IV fluids for severe dehydration, not oral).
NCLEX Relevance
High-yield test-taking strategy. Favor non-invasive when stable.
