Definition
Libido is the conscious sexual desire. Changes in libido may reflect physical, psychological, hormonal, or medication-related influences.
Causes of Decreased Libido
- Depression, anxiety
- Fatigue, stress
- Medications: SSRIs, beta-blockers, antihypertensives, opioids, hormonal contraceptives
- Hormonal changes: low testosterone, menopause, thyroid disorders
- Chronic illness
- Relationship issues
Causes of Increased Libido
Mania, certain medications (dopamine agonists), hyperthyroidism.
Nursing Considerations
Sensitive, non-judgmental approach. Use PLISSIT model (Permission, Limited Information, Specific Suggestions, Intensive Therapy). Review medications. Refer to appropriate specialists (urologist, gynecologist, endocrinologist, therapist). Reassure that libido changes are common and often treatable.
