Ligation

Surgical tying off of a structure, usually a blood vessel or duct

Definition

Ligation is the surgical tying off of a blood vessel, duct, or other tubular structure to prevent blood flow or material passage.

Common Types

  • Tubal ligation: Permanent female sterilization.
  • Variceal band ligation: Treatment of esophageal varices in cirrhosis.
  • Hemorrhoidectomy/hemorrhoidal banding: Treatment for hemorrhoids.
  • Ligation of bleeding vessels: During surgery or trauma.

Nursing Considerations

  • Tubal ligation: Verify consent; teach that menstruation continues; reversal not always possible.
  • Variceal banding: Monitor for bleeding, dysphagia; educate about PPIs, avoidance of alcohol.
  • Post-op care: Pain management, monitor for bleeding.

NCLEX Relevance

Variceal band ligation is a high-yield GI procedure for cirrhosis.
