Lordosis

Exaggerated inward curvature of the lumbar spine

Definition

Lordosis is an exaggerated inward (anterior) curvature of the lumbar or cervical spine. Mild lordosis is normal; excessive lordosis causes back pain and postural changes.

Causes

  • Pregnancy (shifts center of gravity)
  • Obesity
  • Weak abdominal muscles
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Poor posture
  • Spondylolisthesis

Clinical Features

'Swayback' appearance, lower back pain, forward-tilting pelvis, buttocks appear more prominent. May cause muscle strain and decreased mobility.

Nursing Interventions

Core-strengthening exercises, weight management, posture correction, ergonomic workplace. Physical therapy referrals. Analgesics for pain. Pregnant women: body mechanics teaching, supportive shoes and clothing, proper lifting.

NCLEX Relevance

Common postural finding in pregnancy. Encourage body mechanics.
