Malignant

Describing cancerous, invasive tumors with metastatic potential

Definition

Malignant refers to tumors that are cancerous. Characterized by rapid, uncontrolled growth, invasion of surrounding tissues, and ability to metastasize to distant sites.

Malignant Features

  • Poor differentiation (anaplasia)
  • Rapid growth
  • Local invasion (no capsule)
  • Metastasis through blood, lymph, direct extension
  • Recurrence after removal
  • Systemic effects (cachexia, paraneoplastic syndromes)

Nursing Considerations

Support patients through diagnosis, treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy), and survivorship or end-of-life care. Assess symptoms (pain, fatigue, psychosocial distress). Teach about treatment side effects and infection prevention (neutropenia).

NCLEX Relevance

Contrast with benign. Metastasis signals advanced disease.
