Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

A prioritization framework from physiologic to self-actualization needs

Definition

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological framework ranking human needs in ascending order: physiologic, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Basic needs must be met before higher needs.

Nursing Application

  1. Physiologic (first): Airway, breathing, circulation, food, water, elimination, sleep
  2. Safety: Fall prevention, infection control
  3. Love/belonging: Social support, relationships
  4. Esteem: Independence, dignity
  5. Self-actualization: Personal growth

When to Use

When ABCs do not distinguish answer choices, apply Maslow. Physiologic always first.

NCLEX Relevance

Classic prioritization framework; fallback when ABCs don't separate options.
