Meatus

An opening or passage leading to the interior of the body

Definition

A meatus is an opening or short passage to the interior of the body. Common examples include the urinary (urethral) meatus, auditory (ear canal) meatus, and nasal meatus.

Clinical Applications

  • Urinary meatus: Assess for urethral discharge, trauma, catheterization access. Clean during perineal care and Foley care.
  • External auditory meatus: Ear canal; assess for cerumen, infection, foreign bodies.
  • Nasal meatus: Passages in nose; inspect for obstruction or deviation.

Nursing Care

Perform meatal care with soap and water for catheterized patients. Do not use antiseptic solutions. May disrupt normal flora and increase infection risk.

NCLEX Relevance
