The Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN) is the current NCLEX format, launched April 2023, designed to measure clinical judgment using case studies and novel item types based on the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM).

  • Case studies: 6 items per patient scenario
  • Standalone clinical judgment items (e.g., Bowtie)
  • New item types: matrix, highlight, drag-and-drop, drop-down cloze, bowtie, trend
  • Partial credit scoring
  • Exam length: 70 to 135 items (RN)

Content Weight

Four client needs domains: Safe/Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, Physiological Integrity (largest).

Exam Strategy

Apply CJMM systematically. Read cases carefully. Information updates between items. Use partial credit scoring to your advantage.

NCLEX Relevance

NGN is THE exam format. All 2026 test-takers will encounter these items.
