Oophorectomy
Surgical removal of one or both ovaries
Definition
An oophorectomy is the surgical removal of one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) ovaries. Bilateral oophorectomy induces surgical menopause.
Indications
- Ovarian cancer or malignancy prevention (BRCA+ patients)
- Large ovarian cysts or tumors
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- With hysterectomy for benign or malignant conditions
Postoperative Nursing Care
- Pain management
- Monitor bleeding, assess incision
- Encourage early ambulation (DVT prevention)
- Bowel sound assessment (return of peristalsis)
- Foley catheter management
Surgical Menopause Considerations
Abrupt drop in estrogen causes hot flashes, mood changes, osteoporosis risk, cardiovascular risk. Discuss hormone replacement therapy options if not contraindicated.
