Oophorectomy

Surgical removal of one or both ovaries

Definition

An oophorectomy is the surgical removal of one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) ovaries. Bilateral oophorectomy induces surgical menopause.

Indications

  • Ovarian cancer or malignancy prevention (BRCA+ patients)
  • Large ovarian cysts or tumors
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • With hysterectomy for benign or malignant conditions

Postoperative Nursing Care

  • Pain management
  • Monitor bleeding, assess incision
  • Encourage early ambulation (DVT prevention)
  • Bowel sound assessment (return of peristalsis)
  • Foley catheter management

Surgical Menopause Considerations

Abrupt drop in estrogen causes hot flashes, mood changes, osteoporosis risk, cardiovascular risk. Discuss hormone replacement therapy options if not contraindicated.
