Partial Credit Scoring
NGN scoring method awarding points for partially correct answers
Definition
Partial Credit Scoring is the NGN method that awards points for correct elements of a question even when the full answer is not perfect. It replaces the all-or-nothing scoring of traditional SATA items.
Common Types
- Plus-Minus (+/-): Points added for correct selections, subtracted for incorrect; minimum score zero.
- Dyad scoring: Action + Rationale must both be correct to get the point.
- Partial: Each correct selection earns a point; incorrect selections earn no deduction in some formats.
Strategy
Answer what you know. Do not guess wildly. Incorrect selections may reduce score. Re-read each option to decide true/false independently.
NCLEX Relevance
Most NGN items use some form of partial credit scoring.
