Polydipsia
Excessive thirst
Definition
Polydipsia is abnormally excessive thirst and consumption of fluids. It is commonly associated with hyperglycemia, diabetes insipidus, and dehydration.
Causes
- Diabetes mellitus (hyperglycemic osmotic diuresis)
- Diabetes insipidus (decreased ADH)
- Hypercalcemia
- Severe dehydration
- Psychogenic polydipsia
- Medications (lithium, diuretics)
Associated Symptoms
One of the '3 P's' of diabetes: polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia. May also accompany weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision.
Nursing Interventions
Assess blood glucose, electrolytes, urine specific gravity. Monitor I&O. Identify and treat underlying cause, for diabetes: educate about glucose management. For DI: desmopressin (DDAVP). Address psychogenic causes with mental health referral; caution with free water intake (hyponatremia risk).
NCLEX Relevance
