Excessive hunger or food intake

Definition

Causes

  • Pregnancy
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Certain medications (steroids, antihistamines)
  • Depression/anxiety

Clinical Significance

One of the '3 P's' of diabetes: polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia. Despite increased intake, patients with uncontrolled diabetes may lose weight because glucose cannot enter cells.

Nursing Interventions

Assess blood glucose and A1C. Evaluate for weight changes, such as educate on diabetes management, carbohydrate counting, and meal planning. Treat underlying hyperthyroidism or other causes.
