Prognosis is the predicted course, outcome, and likelihood of recovery from a disease or condition, based on medical evidence and individual patient factors.

Communicating Prognosis
Prognostic information must be clear, honest, and culturally sensitive. Nurses reinforce provider discussions and support patient and family understanding. Patients have the right to know or not know their prognosis; respect autonomy.
Nursing Role
Clarify prognosis understanding, facilitate advance care planning, support decision-making, and provide comfort regardless of expected outcome.
