Pus-containing fluid indicating infection

Definition

Purulent describes discharge, exudate, or fluid containing pus, a thick, opaque fluid composed of dead white blood cells, bacteria, and tissue debris. It is a hallmark of bacterial infection.

Characteristics

  • Color: yellow, green, or brown
  • Thick consistency
  • Foul odor (especially anaerobic)
  • Can be localized (abscess) or systemic

Clinical Sources

  • Wounds with infection
  • Abscesses
  • Purulent sputum (pneumonia)
  • Purulent drainage from surgical sites
  • Purulent nasal discharge (bacterial sinusitis)
  • Purulent conjunctivitis

Nursing Interventions

Obtain culture and sensitivity before antibiotics. Wound care with sterile technique. Administer appropriate antibiotics. Monitor for systemic infection/sepsis. Educate on infection prevention.
