Low-pitched snoring lung sounds from airway mucus
Definition
Rhonchi are low-pitched, rumbling, continuous sounds heard on auscultation, typically during expiration. They indicate airflow through large airways with mucus or other secretions.
Causes
- Bronchitis
- COPD
- Pneumonia with mucus
- Cystic fibrosis
- Aspiration
Key Feature
Rhonchi often CLEAR or change with coughing. Distinguishing them from crackles. If they persist or patient cannot clear them, assist with suctioning, humidified air, postural drainage, chest physiotherapy.
Nursing Interventions
Encourage coughing and deep breathing. Adequate hydration to thin secretions (incentive spirometry). Suction as needed. Bronchodilators and mucolytics as ordered. HOB elevation.

Rhonchi clear with coughing; crackles do not.
