Run-out-of-Time (ROOT) Rule

NCLEX scoring rule when time expires before stop criteria met

Definition

The Run-out-of-Time (ROOT) Rule applies when a candidate reaches the 5-hour time limit without the CAT meeting stopping criteria. The computer evaluates performance on the LAST 60 items to determine pass/fail.

Key Facts

  • 5-hour total time limit
  • Includes breaks
  • Last 60 items must consistently be above passing standard to pass
  • Stressful for slow test-takers

Prevention Strategy

Practice pacing (about 2 minutes per item average). Don't linger on any single item. Use breaks strategically.

NCLEX Relevance

Rare outcome. Most candidates finish well before time limit.
