Sanguineous
Describing bloody wound drainage
Definition
Sanguineous refers to bright red, bloody drainage. It is expected in fresh wounds and can indicate active bleeding or tissue trauma.
Wound Drainage Types
- Serous: Clear, watery.
- Sanguineous: Bright red, bloody.
- Serosanguineous: Pink, a mix of serum and blood (normal in early healing).
- Purulent: Thick yellow/green, infected.
- Seropurulent: Yellowish watery purulent.
Nursing Considerations
Document color, amount, consistency, and odor of drainage. Sanguineous drainage is expected in the first 24 to 48 hours post-op, increasing or persistent bright red bleeding may indicate hemorrhage (notify provider). Monitor vital signs and hemoglobin.
NCLEX Relevance
Serosanguineous normal in early healing, increasing sanguineous = potential hemorrhage.
