Definition

Stenosis is the abnormal narrowing of a body passage, vessel, or valve, obstructing or restricting flow.

Common Types

  • Aortic stenosis: Classic triad: syncope, angina, dyspnea (SAD).
  • Mitral stenosis: Often from rheumatic heart disease.
  • Carotid stenosis: Stroke risk.
  • Spinal stenosis: Back pain, neurogenic claudication.
  • Renal artery stenosis: Secondary hypertension.
  • Pyloric stenosis: Infant projectile vomiting.

Nursing Interventions

Varies by location. Monitor symptoms and complications. Medications to manage hypertension, anticoagulation, and symptoms. Surgical or interventional procedures: valve replacement, angioplasty with stent, endarterectomy, laminectomy.
