Substance Misuse
The 2026 NCLEX term replacing 'substance abuse'
Definition
Substance misuse is the official 2026 NCLEX replacement term for 'substance abuse.' The language change reflects a move toward person-centered, non-stigmatizing terminology that focuses on the behavior rather than labeling the person.
Preferred Terminology
- 'Person with a substance use disorder' (not 'addict' or 'abuser')
- 'Substance misuse' or 'substance use disorder' (not 'substance abuse')
- 'In recovery' or 'in remission' (not 'clean')
Clinical Significance
Stigma is a major barrier to treatment, such as person-first language supports therapeutic rapport, reduces shame, and improves engagement with care.
Nursing Interventions
Use person-first language; provide nonjudgmental, compassionate care; assess for withdrawal; connect with treatment resources; administer medications per CIWA (alcohol) or COWS (opioid). Educate about harm reduction.
NCLEX Relevance
Recognize person-centered language in answer choices.
