Systole

The cardiac phase of ventricular contraction

Definition

Systole is the phase of the cardiac cycle during which the ventricles contract, ejecting blood into the aorta and pulmonary arteries. Corresponds to the 'top number' of blood pressure.

Systolic Blood Pressure

  • Normal: less than 120 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120 to 129
  • Stage 1 HTN: 130 to 139
  • Stage 2 HTN: ≥ 140
  • Hypertensive crisis: greater than 180

Systolic Heart Failure

Reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF, EF ≤ 40%). Heart cannot contract forcefully enough. Treatment: ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, spironolactone, SGLT2 inhibitors, diuretics.

Nursing Considerations

Monitor BP trends. Recognize systolic hypertension as cardiovascular risk. Manage systolic heart failure with guideline-directed therapy, daily weights, sodium restriction.
