Tinnitus
Perception of ringing, buzzing, or humming sounds in the ears
Definition
Tinnitus is the perception of sound (ringing, buzzing, hissing) without an external source. It may be temporary or chronic, unilateral or bilateral.
Causes
- Noise-induced hearing loss
- Presbycusis (age-related hearing loss)
- Ménière's disease
- Cerumen impaction
- Medications: ASPIRIN (toxicity), aminoglycosides, loop diuretics, cisplatin, quinine
- Acoustic neuroma
- TMJ disorders
Nursing Interventions
Identify contributory medications (especially aspirin toxicity; tinnitus is classic warning sign). Refer to audiology. Reassure patient when cause is not dangerous. Teach noise protection (hearing protection at work, limit loud music). Sound-masking devices or hearing aids may help. Address underlying cause.
NCLEX Relevance
Tinnitus = classic ASPIRIN TOXICITY cue. Hold aspirin and notify provider.
