Definition
Ventilation is the mechanical movement of air between the atmosphere and the alveoli. It includes inspiration (active) and expiration (largely passive). Distinct from gas exchange (diffusion across alveolar membrane).
Mechanical Ventilation
Supports patients unable to ventilate adequately on their own. Modes: assist-control (AC), pressure-controlled (PC), SIMV, pressure support. Settings: FiO2, respiratory rate, tidal volume, PEEP.
Ventilator Alarms
- High-pressure: Kink in tubing, mucus plug, biting, pneumothorax, bronchospasm
- Low-pressure: Disconnection, cuff leak, extubation
