Cloze (Drop-down)
An NGN fill-in-the-blank using drop-down menus
Definition
Cloze (drop-down) items present a sentence or paragraph with blanks that must be filled by selecting options from drop-down menus, such as they commonly link conditions, actions, and rationales.
Example
'The client is most likely experiencing [drop-down: DKA / HHS / hypoglycemia] based on [drop-down: elevated glucose / ketones / Kussmaul breathing]. The priority intervention is [drop-down: insulin drip / oral glucose / IV fluids].'
Strategy
- Work through each blank systematically
- Use pathophysiology to link condition, evidence, and treatment
- If one drop-down narrows the possibilities, it often dictates the others
Scoring
Often uses Rationale Scoring. All drop-downs must be correct for full credit in dyad items.
