Definition
Idiopathic describes any disease or condition that arises spontaneously and has no identifiable cause despite thorough investigation. Many 'idiopathic' conditions eventually have their cause discovered as science advances.
Common Idiopathic Conditions
- Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Autoimmune
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)
- Idiopathic scoliosis
- Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
- Primary (idiopathic) hypertension
Nursing Considerations
Educate patients that 'idiopathic' does not mean untreatable. It refers to cause, not prognosis. Provide supportive care, symptom management, and information about available treatments. Refer for genetic counseling if family patterns suggest heredity.
