Recognize Cues
Step 1 of NCJMM: identifying relevant patient data
Definition
Recognize Cues is Step 1 of the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. The nurse identifies important information from a patient scenario. Vital signs, symptoms, labs, history, medications, that may signal a clinical issue.
Types of Cues
- Environmental: Fall risks, safety hazards
- Subjective: Patient statements, reports
- Objective: Vital signs, assessment findings, lab values
Item Formats
Highlight text or table items. The student identifies clinically relevant or concerning pieces of information embedded in a longer note or chart.
Strategy
Read the scenario fully, then re-read for abnormal or unexpected findings, such as consider context (age, diagnosis, medications). Flag data that warrants further investigation.
