SATA (Select All That Apply)

A multi-select NCLEX question format with partial credit scoring

Definition

A Select All That Apply (SATA) question is a multi-select NCLEX item where the test-taker must identify ALL correct options from a list. There is no fixed number of correct answers. Could be 1 or all.

Scoring

Modern NGN uses +/- scoring (Plus-Minus Scoring): gain points for each correct selection, lose points for each incorrect selection; minimum score zero (discourages guessing).

Strategy

  • Treat each option as a separate true/false question
  • Answer based on whether the option is correct, not on relative ranking
  • Don't assume a certain number is correct
  • Read carefully. 'all that apply' means exactly that
  • Don't leave blank (may still score zero)

Extended Multiple Response

NGN variant: list of up to 10 options, allowing partial credit for selecting most (not all) correct options.

NCLEX Relevance

High-difficulty format. Partial credit rewards careful analysis.
