Definition

Veracity is the ethical principle of truthfulness and honesty in communication with patients, colleagues, and the public. It is essential to the therapeutic relationship and informed consent.

Applications in Nursing

• Truthful communication about diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments
• Honest reporting of errors
• Accurate documentation
• Informed consent
• Not deceiving patients, even for their 'own good'

Tensions

Cultural considerations: In some cultures, family may wish to shield the patient from bad news. Work with family while respecting patient autonomy to know or not know. 'Therapeutic privilege' (withholding information) is rarely justified.

Tell the truth. If asked about prognosis or diagnosis, be honest and compassionate; involve the care team as needed.
