Matrix / Grid Item
An NGN item requiring selections within a table of options
Definition
A Matrix or Grid Item is a Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN) question format where the test-taker makes selections in a table format. It comes in two main subtypes: Matrix Multiple Choice (one answer per row) and Matrix Multiple Response (multiple answers per row/column).
Common Uses
- Differentiating related conditions (e.g., which findings are expected vs unexpected)
- Comparing lab trends
- Matching interventions to rationales
- Evaluating multiple patients
Strategy
Treat each row or column as a discrete sub-question. Read each option carefully; do not rush or assume that because one row has a certain answer, the next will follow the same pattern. Most use partial-credit scoring.
NCLEX Relevance
Key NGN format requiring systematic clinical analysis. Common on 2026 exam.
